Refund in Lieu/Widow(er)

The widow(er) of any employee, eligible for annuity upon the death of his or her spouse, whose annuity would amount to les than $800.00 a month for life, may, in lieu of a widow(er)’s annuity, elect to receive a refund. The refund will be the accumulated contributions for annuity purposes, based on the amounts contributed by his or her deceased spouse.

Refunds Due to Death

A refund may be available to a designated beneficiary(ies), heirs or an estate. The refund may be a portion or all of a member’s contributions not already received as annuity payments.

If there is no designated beneficiary(ies) or the beneficiary does not survive the employee, the amount can be refunded to the employee’s children in equal parts with the children of a deceased child taking the share of the parent.
